Mountainside is a Union County borough with a population of about 6,680. It was ranked by New Jersey Monthly as 8th on its list of "Best Places to Live" in New Jersey, and it is not difficult to see why. Efforts have been made to preserve the tranquility and rural character of the town - there are no apartments, condominiums, or town houses, and virtually all the housing units are single-family detached homes. There are still plenty of stores and businesses in its retail district on Mountain Avenue, and it is a short drive to The Mall at Short Hills or Menlo Park Mall. Deerfield School (K-8) is the only school in the borough, and students go on to attend Governor Livingston High School in neighboring Berkeley Heights. About a third of the borough is public parkland, with trails, playgrounds boating, and more for residents to enjoy.
